Longines has a long and rich history related to sports and exploration, both terrestrial and underwater. As early as 1937, the company introduced the first chronograph with waterproof pushers, and in 1958 it made its first diver’s watch. In 1959, a watch was created specifically for underwater exploration, featuring an innovative Super-Compressor case with an internal rotating disc and two screw-down crowns.

The case, designed by Piquerez, is fitted with a system that increases the resistance of the case as pressure increases, giving the watch a 120 m waterproof rating. To counter the wear and tear caused by the bakelite rotating bezels previously used on its diving watches, Longines decided to fit the dial of reference 7042 with a rotating bezel positioned inside the dial, an element taken from certain early twentieth-century aviator's watches. These two elements give the Super Compressor a distinctive appearance and an important place in the history of diver's watches.
