Longines Ultra-Chron Ref. 8228-1 Green

Introduced in 1967, the Longines Ultra-Chron collection represented one of the manufacture's most ambitious technical achievements of the late 1960s. At a time when the Swiss watch industry was pursuing increasingly precise mechanical timekeeping, Longines developed a family of high-frequency automatic movements operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 10 beats per second. This remarkable frequency was intended to improve chronometric stability and precision, placing the Ultra-Chron among the most technically advanced mechanical wristwatches of its generation.

The calibre 431 was central to this development. Equipped with a high-frequency escapement and automatic winding, it embodied Longines' commitment to precision engineering during a period of extraordinary innovation. The Ultra-Chron family also reflected the aesthetic transformation taking place in Swiss watchmaking throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, when traditional round cases gradually gave way to more architectural, integrated and unconventional designs.

This particular example, reference 8228-1, dates to 1969 and features a beautifully proportioned steel cushion-shaped case with distinctive brushed and polished surfaces. Its most captivating feature is undoubtedly the original dial, which has developed a remarkable olive-green coloration through natural ageing. Originally displaying a different tonal character, the surface has gradually evolved into a warm, almost bronze-green shade, creating an exceptionally attractive and individual appearance.

The applied baton indexes, elegant faceted hands, framed date aperture and characteristic Ultra-Chron emblem contribute to a sophisticated composition that remains unmistakably representative of the period. The contrasting brushed chapter ring adds depth and architectural definition to the dial, while the original typography and delicate surface texture preserve its authentic vintage character.

Powered by the celebrated Longines calibre 431, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, this example combines genuine technical significance with an unusually appealing aesthetic. A custom-made olive-green pigskin leather strap, carefully selected to complement the dial's naturally evolved coloration, completes the watch.
