Long before the El Primero revolutionised the automatic chronograph in 1969, Zenith had already established itself as one of the most accomplished names in traditional chronograph manufacturing. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Le Locle manufacture produced a fascinating range of manually wound chronographs, combining sophisticated mechanical architecture with the understated elegance that defined the finest Swiss watchmaking of the period.

Among these creations, the gold-cased chronographs bearing Zenith’s distinctive applied star logo occupy a particularly appealing place. Known affectionately as "Stellina", these watches embody an era when precious metals, carefully considered proportions and genuine mechanical complexity came together without unnecessary ostentation. Today, they offer collectors an alternative perspective on Zenith’s heritage: one that precedes the celebrated El Primero and reveals the depth of the manufacture’s earlier expertise.

Our example, The Golden Stellina, is a particularly compelling expression of this tradition. Dating to 1962, it combines a solid rose-gold case, a manually wound column-wheel chronograph movement and a remarkably generous 38 mm diameter. At a time when many elegant wristwatches measured considerably less, this larger format lends the watch a confident presence on the wrist while preserving the refinement of its original design.

The case is one of its defining features. Its warm rose-gold tone is beautifully complemented by slender, sharply defined lugs and rounded pump pushers, creating a silhouette that feels both architectural and elegant. The substantial construction gives the watch a reassuring weight, while the screw-down case back adds a further element of solidity. For collectors who appreciate vintage gold watches with genuine wrist presence, the proportions are particularly attractive.

The sunburst silvered white dial introduces a subtle play of light across its warm surface. Three recessed chronograph registers establish the classic tricompax arrangement, balanced by faceted applied baton markers and an external Base 1000 tachymeter scale. At twelve o’clock, the applied Zenith star provides the defining detail, lending the dial its unmistakable identity and connecting the watch directly to the manufacture’s mid-century design language.

Powering the chronograph is the Zenith calibre 146H, a manually wound, three-register movement with column-wheel control. Developed within the tradition of the Martel chronograph architecture, this movement belongs to an important chapter in Zenith’s technical history, when the manufacture was refining its expertise in high-quality mechanical chronographs well before the advent of automatic winding. Its construction and traditional operating architecture make it particularly interesting to collectors who value the mechanics of the pre-El Primero era.

The combination of this movement with a substantial solid-gold case is what gives the Stellina its particular character. It is not simply an elegant gold dress watch with an additional complication, but a fully fledged chronograph whose technical sophistication is matched by the quality and presence of its exterior.

The watch is completed by a black textured pigskin leather strap, providing a restrained contrast against the rose gold, together with its original vintage buckle.

The Golden Stellina is a vintage Zenith for the discerning collector: generous in proportion, substantial in precious metal and powered by one of the manufacture’s most interesting traditional chronograph movements. A compelling reminder that Zenith’s chronograph heritage was already rich and accomplished long before the El Primero became a legend.
