Universal Genève was founded in Le Locle, Switzerland in 1894 and was originally known as "Universal Watch." Since its inception, Universal Genève has produced watches with unusually high quality for their price point. Universal was among the first brands to introduce a chronograph wristwatch.
Today, the firm's vintage models are highly sought-after and desired for their oversized cases and interesting dial designs. Key models include a variety of "Compax" models such as the "Nina Rindt" or "Evil Nina," the Uni-Compax, the Space-Compax, the Aero-Compax and the Film-Compax.
Moreover, Universal occasionally also tested itself in the creation of very large specimens of chronic and the reference 12515 here offered is definitely one of those.
A single glance is sufficient to realise the supreme aesthetic impact of this very watch, featuring an incredibly oversize gold case measuring 46 mm. Such a large diameter is beyond unusual for the time, and it points to a professional or military intended destination of the piece. The yellow gold case is absolutely well reserved with fine proportions and still deep and visible the reference and serial numbers on the case. The dial is in awesome conditions, with its age charm and appeal presenting radium arabic numeral and hands, outer tachometer scale and the three subsidiary dials for constant seconds, 30 minutes and 12 hours registration.
The extreme rarity of this chronograph is unquestionable. The large dimensions , specially designed to facilitate its use in flight, are surprising in how much, the lines, are nevertheless elegant and proportionate.
The radium dial is another rarity within the rarity, as is the onion crown, wisely substituted for a better grip with the, not very sensitive, leather gloves with which aviators flew in the 1940s.
The caliber, with column wheel, 292 is in perfect condition, as well as all the "over 80" remaining components.
