Oversized chronographs from the 1930s and 1940s occupy a particularly fascinating place in vintage watch collecting. Long before large cases became a modern stylistic choice, certain chronographs were already being produced in remarkably generous proportions, conceived as precise and highly legible instruments.

This 1938 Seni Watch is a particularly compelling example of that early oversized aesthetic. At 38 mm, its substantial 18K gold case, articulated lugs and hinged caseback give it an imposing yet remarkably refined presence.
Seni Watch itself belongs to the fascinating world of independent Italian watch names connected with Milan and the international network of Swiss watchmaking. Rather than operating as a traditional manufacture, the name appears to have been part of the commercial ecosystem that connected Italian entrepreneurs and retailers with Switzerland's highly specialised industry, combining Swiss-made cases and movements with Italian commercial identities.

This particular example is especially significant because its 1938 production predates the later documented formalisation of the Seni Watch name, making it a fascinating and exceptionally early chapter in the history of the brand.
The case is particularly compelling. The articulated lugs, often referred to as “floating” lugs, are a characteristic solution of the period, allowing the watch to sit naturally on the wrist while adding considerable visual complexity. Inside the hinged caseback we find the Swiss case-maker's mark No. 147 (Kohli & Hess, Tramelan).

The combination of an oversized 38 mm diameter and solid 18K yellow gold is exceptionally unusual for a chronograph of this era and is one of the defining characteristics of this example.
The dial is arguably the most beautiful element of the watch. Its elaborate architecture brings together large Arabic numerals, a precise outer minute track, telemetric and tachymetric scales and the distinctive concentric “snail” configuration.

The base-1000 scale adds another technical layer to an already exceptionally sophisticated layout. Despite the amount of information, the composition remains remarkably balanced, with the small seconds at 9 o'clock, 30-minute register at 3 o'clock and central chronograph hand creating a perfectly proportioned three-point structure. The naturally aged surface and even patina further enhance its character.
At its heart is the Landeron 3, an early hand-wound column-wheel chronograph movement. Its presence is particularly significant in the context of a 1938 example, placing the watch firmly within the formative years of modern wrist chronograph design.
The use of high-grade Swiss movements by lesser-known independent names was common practice during this period, and today such combinations can be considerably more difficult to encounter than watches from the better-documented major manufacturers.

What makes this particular Seni Watch so compelling is therefore not simply its name, but the extraordinary combination of elements that has survived intact: an oversized 38 mm 18K gold case, articulated lugs, hinged caseback, an elaborate scientific dial with snail and base-1000 scales, and the rare Landeron 3 column-wheel chronograph. More than simply a beautiful survivor from the late 1930s, it also appears to represent an exceptionally early chapter in the story of Seni Watch — a genuinely unusual chronograph from one of the most fascinating periods in early wristwatch design.
