Introduced in 1967, the Submariner reference 1680represents one of the most important milestones in the evolution of Rolex’s legendary dive watch. Produced until around 1980, it marked the first time the Submariner was fitted with a date complication, a feature that would permanently change the identity of the model. With the addition of the date window at 3 o’clock and the iconic Cyclops magnifier, Rolex created a configuration that has remained the standard for the Submariner Date ever since.
Among all examples of the reference 1680, the earliest pieces known as “Red Sub” hold a special place in vintage Rolex collecting. Produced only during the first part of the reference’s production, until roughly 1975, these watches take their nickname from the red “Submariner” line printed on the dial. That single detail transformed an already significant reference into one of the most desirable vintage sports watches in the Rolex universe.
This example features the highly collectible MK4 dial, recognizable by the classic “feet first” depth rating and the distinctive open 6 typography. The dial is preserved in remarkable condition, with tritium markers that have aged into a warm yellow tone highly appreciated by collectors. The bezel insert has developed an elegant silver-grey fade over time, creating a striking contrast with the deep black dial. The case remains strong and unpolished, while the steel band is still tight and well preserved, completing a superb and honest example of one of the most iconic vintage Submariners ever produced.
