The GMT-Master II ref. 16710 represents one of the most fascinating transitional eras in Rolex sports watch production. Introduced during the late 1980s, this reference arrived at a moment when international travel was becoming increasingly associated with modern luxury, business culture and global lifestyles. Originally born as a professional tool watch for Pan Am pilots in the 1950s, the GMT-Master evolved throughout the decades into one of the most recognizable travel watches ever produced, and the 16710 became the perfect bridge between vintage charm and modern reliability.

This L-series example from 1988 belongs to the very beginning of the reference production and preserves all the character collectors look for today: warm tritium lume, slimmer case proportions compared to later generations, drilled lug aesthetics and the unmistakable red and black “Coke” bezel. The bezel itself became iconic for its bold contrast and sporty personality, offering a more understated alternative to the famous Pepsi configuration while maintaining the unmistakable GMT identity.
