In 1955, Rolex unveils their very first model of their now-famous pilot watch - the Rolex GMT-Master ref. 6542. A tool watch through and through, the GMT-Master was made specifically for commercial airline pilots. And not just any airline, but the reigning airline of the day, Pan Am.
The blue and red colors of the Rolex GMT-Master ref. 6542 became an icon of its own right and picked up its own nickname " Pepsi ". The Rolex 6542 included a luminous bakelite bezel insert, the case is a three-pieces Oyster, waterproof up to 50 meters (165 ft). Crown-guards are absent, the luminous paint on both dial and hands was manufactured with radium and strontium-90, the caliber powering the 6542 was the, renamed 1066. It was certified as chronometer and featured a rotor that will be then nicknamed "butterfly" because of its shape.
This reference is by far the rarest and most sought after in the GMT world and more generally in the Rolex world. The case never polished, the original bezel in great and original conditions, the bracelet taut and healthy, the dial with a toning that enhances the original lume, make this object a piece of very high collector's value
