The Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016 is one of the defining references of vintage Rolex, and examples from the final years of production occupy a particularly interesting position within the collecting landscape. This 1987 example, serial 9.66x.xxx, belongs to the late production of the reference and is equipped with the highly sought-after tritium dial and hands.

The last four digits of the Explorer 1016 production are especially significant. By 1987, the reference was firmly within its final production period, with Rolex having maintained the fundamental visual language of the 1016 for decades. The combination of the matte black dial, gilt-coloured printing, applied luminous numerals and tritium material represents the mature expression of the Explorer aesthetic, immediately recognizable to the specialist collector. The tritium plots have naturally aged over time, developing the characteristic patina that distinguishes an original period-correct dial from later service replacements.
