The very first Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date was presented in the mid-1950s and had the four-digit reference number 65xx. In the 1960s, Rolex introduced the 15xx reference family. Until then, these watches did not have a quick date function, i.e. the date could not be set independently of the hands. That changed with the five-digit reference 15xxx that was introduced in the 1980s. This rare transitional version was produced in a short production time. The watches had the popular acrylic crystal from the previous reference 15xx. At the same time, the reference 15xxx was equipped with the improved chronometer caliber 3035, which had a quick-set date. The reference 15xxx paved the way for the sapphire glass Perpetual Date introduced in the 1990s, which is still in production today.
