There are vintage chronographs whose significance extends far beyond the recognition of the name on their dial. This exceptional Initiative, dating to 1937, is a fascinating example of pre-war Swiss watchmaking, combining an impressive 39 mm hinged case in solid 18k yellow gold, an elaborate white enamel dial and elegant flame-blued steel hands.
The history of Initiative takes us back to La Chaux-de-Fonds, one of the most important centres of Swiss horology. Historical trademark records document the registration of the Initiative name on September 8, 1903, by C. Meyer-Graber, associated with Fabrique Selection Watch and Comptoir National d'Horlogerie. The brand's early history is particularly interesting: Antiquorum has documented an Initiative quarter-repeating chronograph pocket watch dating to approximately 1910, housed in an 18k gold case, demonstrating that the signature was already associated with technically ambitious timepieces during the early twentieth century. On June 7, 1943, the trademark passed to Montre Dolmy SA / Vittori & Cie. The present chronograph, dating to 1937, therefore belongs to the earlier chapter of Initiative's history, before this change of ownership.
Its most captivating feature is undoubtedly the extraordinary white enamel dial. Produced through traditional high-temperature firing techniques, enamel possesses a particular depth and luminosity, with an almost porcelain-like surface that distinguishes it from conventional painted or lacquered dials. The composition is remarkably sophisticated: a red peripheral telemeter graduated in kilometres surrounds the chronograph seconds track, while an intricate blue spiral tachymeter occupies the centre. Two recessed subsidiary registers complete an exceptionally elaborate arrangement, combining several measurement functions within a surprisingly harmonious design. The dial's character is further enhanced by contrasting Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock, elongated hour markers and delicate flame-blued steel hands, whose distinctive colour is achieved through carefully controlled heating rather than chemical treatment.
The case deserves equal attention. Crafted in solid 18k yellow gold, its substantial 39 mm diameter is particularly impressive for a wristwatch dating to 1937. Its traditional hinged construction reflects an earlier generation of watchmaking, when precious-metal cases were frequently conceived as sophisticated mechanical structures in their own right. The rounded bezel, sculpted lugs, prominent winding crown and chronograph pushers create a beautifully balanced silhouette, combining the elegance of a fine gold wristwatch with the unmistakable presence of a technical instrument. Completing the watch is a bespoke, handcrafted honey-coloured alligator leather strap, whose warm golden-brown tones perfectly complement the richness of the gold case.
From a collector's perspective, this Initiative is particularly compelling. Its appeal lies not simply in its age or precious-metal construction, but in the convergence of several highly desirable characteristics: a historically documented Swiss signature, an unusually large pre-war hinged gold case, a complex multi-scale enamel dial and traditional flame-blued hands. A remarkable expression of 1930s chronograph design, representing a fascinating and often overlooked chapter in the history of Swiss watchmaking.
