Chopard was founded by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in the Swiss village of Sonvilier. He was only 24 years old at the time. The watches were known for their high quality and reliability.

In the 20th century, Chopard continued to innovate. The family expanded the brand’s reach and maintained a high standard of watchmaking.The brand faced difficulties during World War II and the subsequent economic hardships, which affected many luxury goods manufacturers. In 1963, Paul-André Chopard, having no successor to take over the family business, sold the company to Karl Scheufele III, a German goldsmith and watchmaker. This marked a new era of revitalization for Chopard, with the integration of fine jewelry into its offerings, broadening its market appeal.
