The 1970s ushered in a new era for high-end timepieces with the emergence of the “luxury sports watch” — a term now synonymous with prestige, innovation, and versatility. Characterized by their use of stainless steel and integrated bracelets, these watches blended sporty aesthetics with luxury craftsmanship.
In response to this growing trend, Cartier looked to reinvent one of its heritage pieces: the Santos. Originally created in 1904 for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, the watch was redesigned in 1978 and reintroduced as the Santos de Cartier. The update featured an integrated bracelet in stainless steel—an unprecedented move for Cartier, which had previously worked exclusively with precious metals. To maintain a sense of refinement and brand identity, Cartier added 18k gold accents, creating a striking two tone (or “bimetal”) design. This aesthetic became wildly popular throughout the 1980s, epitomized by power-dressers like Gordon Gekko in Wall Street. Today, the Santos de Cartier continues to embody the perfect balance of sportiness and sophistication, remaining a staple in the luxury watch world.
