There are watches that simply belong to a collection, and there are watches that reveal something about the person wearing them. The Cartier Pasha has always occupied that more interesting territory.

Born from Cartier’s fascination with the Pasha of Marrakech and introduced in its modern form in the 1980s, the Pasha brought together a distinctly Cartier vocabulary — the round case, Vendôme-style lugs, protective crown cap and cabochon — with a more assertive, almost sporty architecture. Its identity was deliberately different from the discreet elegance of the Tank or the Santos.

The design belongs to an era when Cartier was increasingly exploring the expressive potential of the wristwatch, and the Pasha became one of the maison’s most recognizable shapes. Its proportions, graphic dial and unusual crown protector gave it an unmistakable personality, while its automatic movement made it an eminently wearable everyday Cartier.

But for the collector, the real fascination begins with the configurations.

The standard Pasha is relatively easy to recognize. The more unusual dials and combinations are another matter. Pink mother-of-pearl, in particular, transforms the character of the watch completely: instead of the monochromatic confidence of the steel-and-white versions, the dial catches and reflects the light with subtle changes of tone, creating a softer, distinctly feminine interpretation of the Pasha. The contrast between the jewellery-like reflections of mother-of-pearl and the technical presence of the automatic movement is precisely what makes the Pasha so compelling.

For a woman’s collection, this is an especially interesting Cartier. It has the presence of a serious mechanical watch without relying on excessive size, and the pink details bring an unmistakable jewellery sensibility without turning the watch into a purely decorative object.

The Pasha is at its best when it sits between categories: sporting and elegant, masculine in its architecture yet distinctly feminine in its expression, unmistakably Cartier but far less conventional than the maison’s most familiar icons.
