The first Breitling Chronomat was introduced in 1940 as a predecessor to the brand's Navitimer watch. In 1984, the Chronomat collection was reimagined and relaunched as the model that exists today. The original Breitling Chronomat from the 1940s was created as a tool watch for scientists. When the model first appeared in 1940, the "Chronomat" name was intended as a combination of the words "chronographe mathematique" (meaning mathematical chronograph).
1984 marked Breitling’s 100th anniversary. For the occasion, Ernest Schneider wanted to launch a watch that would revolutionize the industry and bring the mechanical chronograph back to center stage, proving that it could still attract a cool and fashionable clientele.
That year, Breitling introduced the Chronomat Ref. 81.950 — now meaning chronograph automatic — reviving a legendary name that once stood for Chronographe Mathématique, the 1940s ancestor of the Navitimer.
